Norway maple is a large shade tree usually growing 40-60 feet tall but can grow up to 90 feet or more. Another distinct characteristic is the green to burgundy range in leaf color.

Norway maple has many cultivars with distinct forms including columnar, and weeping varieties. Norway maple is widely planted as a shade tree in urban areas because it can tolerate drought, deicing salt, compacted soils, and air pollution. It has naturalized in Great Britain, the northeastern United States, and southeastern Canada.

The first documented Norway maple introduction to North America was in 1756. Means of spread: Plants reproduce by seed which can be spread by wind and water. Although there is much overlap in habitat, Norway maple is found on a broader range. There’s a dark side to this beauty actuall,y this red pigment is produced as a side-effect of something called allelopathy. The oval to rounded crown fills with maroon-yellow flowers in the spring. Leaves turn brown, dark maroon or bronze in the fall before dropping. Norway Maple leaves are some of the first to change colour, turning a blazing scarlet that illuminates streets, parks and woodlands. Crimson King Norway maple grows to a height of 35 to 45 feet spreading about 25 to 30 feet and is quite popular for its purple-green foliage throughout the summer.

In Autumn, the leaves become much easier to tell apart.

In looking at the full trees, Sycamores also tend to grow higher. In fact, although not the same species, it looks very similar to the Maple leaf on the Canadian flag. The main difference is that the Norway Maple has a significantly more jagged edge, and a glossier surface. The picture above shows a Norway Maple leaf on the left and a Sycamore leaf on the right.
